Ingredients
- Custard Mixture
6 large eggs
1 2/3 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp kosher salt
- Bread and Toppings
1 pound loaf of brioche bread preferably day-old, sliced into 3/4-inch thick pieces
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup powdered sugar for serving
Fresh berries for serving (optional)
- Alternative Ingredients
Whole milk can be substituted with almond milk or oat milk.
Heavy cream can be replaced with coconut cream for a dairy-free option.
Brown sugar can be substituted with coconut sugar.
Brioche bread can be replaced with any dense bread like challah or sourdough.
Directions
- Preparation of Custard – In a large mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Soaking the Bread – Submerge each slice of brioche bread in the custard mixture for about 4 seconds on each side. Arrange the soaked slices in a 9×13 inch baking dish in an overlapping fashion. Drizzle any leftover custard over the arranged bread slices. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for optimal flavor infusion.
- Baking the Dish – Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Just before baking, sprinkle the top of the soaked bread with sliced almonds. Place in the oven and bake for approximately 40 minutes or until the top is golden and crispy.
- Serving – Allow the baked French toast to cool for about 10 minutes. Serve warm sprinkled with powdered sugar and garnished with fresh berries if desired.
